Dane DeHaan - Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Released in 2017, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a French space opera – all dialogue occurring in English. The $180 million production cost makes this film the most expensive European and most expensive independent film ever produced. The French film made $226 million at the box office but is considered a “bomb” as additional production and marketing costs greatly exceeded this number. In general, reviews for Valerian were mixed. IndieWire writer, David Ehrlich, noted that the film was “unapologetically idiosyncratic” while it “… only underscores the lifelessness of the people leading us through it.” Not only was the titular character played by Dane DeHann considered to be a bit dull and monotone, his female co-star, Cara Delevingne, suffered the same anti-climactic remarks.
